Well what can I say! Sheer brilliance, exciting, fun, cute, sexy, reliable describes this car. And it did get an award in the Autocar awards taking the title of 'Best Handling Car 2003'. The Mazda MX-5 beat the Porsche 911 GT3, BMW Z4, and Noble M12 GTO 3-R, proving the Mazda MX-5's driving dynamics still offer tremendous driving pleasure. "The Mazda MX-5 offers as much pleasure as a Porsche 911 GT3 regardless of how fast you drive it," enthused Autocar.

This is one of the reason i bought this car. I did spend a few months searching for the right car, if i can rightly remember about 6-7 months of looking and searching. I narrowed it down to wanting a 1.8 litre in my favourite color black. As i was researching for the car i purchased the following book: Mazda MX-5 Renaissance Sportscar by Brian Long.

This little book was a great starting point in getting to know this famous sports car, giving an insight into the production of the cars design and engineering. And also described the various specification of the MX-5 in the different marketing regions of the world.

The specifications of the car differed alot from the market regions which include America, Asia, Europe, Australia. I wanted the UK spec MX-5 and not a Japanese import. To cut a long story short i decide to go for the special limited edition model, and the only 'black number' they did in the UK was the MX-5 Classic which is finished in brilliant black, and feature the following

Black leather with red stitching
Five spoke alloy wheels
Mohoganey wood trim
A stainless steel brace bar
Polished treadplates
MOMO leather steering wheel
Floor mats in black with red edging

And the list price for this model back in 1997 was £17,495 on-the-road. I paid £6k for it in July 2005 at that point the car was around 8 years old. Sounds expensive i here you say, well the car only had 42,000 mile on the clock with a full service history. But having been my first ever car, i thought 'what heck you only young once' so i decided to purchase.

Once i bought it home all the family were in shock, it was the so funny seeing their reation to the little sports car. First thing my grandma said 'now you got a car, you need a girlfriend in their too'. They thought i would buy a small car like a Nissan Micra or a boy racer Corsa. But my dream became a reality which then led to where the fun begins, MODIFICATIONS!!!!!!!!!!

Oh no! Another boy racer with go racing strips and fuffy dice with tacky neon lights. Thats not my style, I like to keep things tasteful, and not go over the top. So the first modification for the car was a Jackson Racing Exhaust System, was expensive but i think was worth every penny. The car did lack the sporty sound because of the OEM exhaust, and i thought this is a sports car and wanted the sound too!!! Its loud when you want it to be, keep the revs at 3500rpm and change into 2nd gear all you can here the Bbboouwww!

MX5 Buying Guide

When ringing a seller I always ask the same questions,
1/ How long have you owned the car?

This will tell you a lot, the longer the better and beware of anything under a year or wonder what has made them sell it so quick.

2/ Has the car had any accidents that they know of?

This will put them on the spot and you normally will get a honest answer, if they say yes make the repair your first check to see how well it was done, walk away from bad repairs.

3/ Has the car a service history?

If it hasn't got some sort of service record I would leave it, first cars need to be serviced and second you will have no way of confirming the mileage.

4/ Has the timing belt been changed? They need changing every 60,000 miles and don't break this rule.

5/ Ask to look at the V5 Document, the service history for the vehicle and all MOT are for the car.

Straight after arranging the view, I logged on to http://www.hpicheck.com and for £12.00 I have a full check done on the car, it confirms the owners words, no record of serious accident damage, no mileage records and no finance owning, I can't recommend this check enough, this is my number 1 buyers guide piece of advise.

BUY HINTS AND TIPS

The Mazda is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. It looks great and provides the sort of driving pleasure few cars can match.

The Mazda MX-5 will hold its value well, regardless of weather or not it is a limited edition or not.

Every potential buyer should be aware of - second hand cars imported from Japan that have either been damaged or are no longer able to pass the strict tests carried out in that country after a car reaches its third birthday.

Auto Express found that a large number of cars were coming to Britain with service histories in Japanese and/or which been involved in accidents.

The engine management systems are different and all Japanese market vehicles are fitted with kph speedometers, giving an ideal opportunity to alter the mileage once it is replaced with an mph speedo.

Japanese market cars do not have the same rust protection as do British market cars.

If an MX-5 is cheap, be careful. Ask plenty of questions insist on seeing the service history and have the car inspected by a professional body.
